Escala
Seattle, Washington This 30-story condominium is located in the Midtown neighborhood of downtown Seattle. The lower exterior is covered with stone, precast concrete, and Greek columns with decorative cornices. The upper tower incorporates a glazing and window wall system. The building includes 270 residential units, eight levels of parking below grade, street-level retail, landscaped terraces at levels one and two, and amenities such as a health club and elegant dining areas.
The structure is constructed of cast-in-place concrete with post-tensioned floor slabs. Seismic loads are resisted by a dual system of shear wall cores and ductile moment frames. Large cantilever balconies help capture the stunning views in all directions.
Escala is the first building in North America to use 100 ksi rebar for column and shear wall confinement, a development that has revolutionized seismic design and construction.
