The record-breaking supertall Wilson Tower will rise 80 floors to a height of 1,035 feet, surpassing Houston's JP Morgan Chase building and becoming the tallest tower in Texas upon completion. The project includes 450 luxury apartments ranging from studios to 3-and 4-bedroom penthouses, and amenities including a pool, movie theater, and cocktail lounge.
The building's narrow width -- just 65' - created significant structural engineering challenges in controlling wind drift and lateral movement. A system of shear walls and mega frames was developed to successfully control building motion and resist the heavy applied wind forces.
A signature architectural design feature is a Brise Soleil or shade structure, wrapping the tower's entire glass exterior on the eastern and western elevations. It is a mid-century architecture touch that has been updated for this modern tower. The wrapped brise soleil offers protection from the hot Texas sun and wind while also providing structural strength.
