General contractor Skanska is primed to top out today on a $400 million expansion project at Snoqualmie Casino.

Crews from Malcolm drilling and Holland Partner Group were breaking up the concrete slab last Friday at 616 Battery St. That's the vacant former Elephant Car Wash site in the Denny Triangle where Holland and partner NASH will build their high-rise apartment project, newly dubbed Sloane. 

Designed by Weber Thompson with all structural engineering by CKC, the proposal stands at 45 stories, with the unit count ending up somewhere between 442 and 455 apartments.

The twin 45-story towers that will comprise Concord Pacific and HB Management's luxury mixed-use apartment building called Seattle House have reached level 13.

Seattle House is rising at 2300 Sixth Ave. in the Denny Triangle neighborhood, a short distance from Amazon's South Lake Union headquarters.

When completed, the 1.3 million-square-foot development will have approximately 1,100 housing units. Most of those will be traditional market-rate rentals. Some are slated to be extended-stay rentals.

Cary Kopczynski, the CEO and founding principal of Seattle-based structural engineering firm Cary Kopczynski & Co. (CKC), has been honored with a 2024 Outstanding Projects and Leadership (OPAL) award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). 

The annual OPAL awards recognize outstanding achievements of ASCE members in five categories: construction, design, education, government, and management.

Holland Partner Group began construction on its 2010 Terry Ave. high-rise, now dubbed The Ayer apartments, in the summer of 2020. It was one of two sites the developer had acquired on the same block from Cornish College. At the very end of December, the city issued a temporary certificate of occupancy for the project.

The Ayer team included CKC as the Structural Engineer and Weber Thompson as the architectural firm.

Productivity in the construction industry has been flat for fifty years while productivity of U.S. industry in general has nearly doubled, as outlined in a recent report by global consulting firm McKinsey & Company. There are many reasons for this productivity stagnation, a major one being the communication disconnect that frequently exists between architects, engineers, and contractors, leading to poor constructability in the field.
